The St Peter’s Old Collegians’ Soccer Club (SPOC SC) has made a very pleasing start to season 2025, now at the halfway mark.
There were many changes to the Club in the summer and we thank those former Committee members for their efforts in the last few years. It had, though, become an urgent matter for us to gain more player numbers, provide more coaching and pathway opportunities for young Saints alumni, to rebuild our financial position and develop some clear methodologies for commitment to training and support for the Club’s operations by all players and officials.
Three months into the season I think it is fair to say that we have made good progress towards this, and we especially thank our dedicated coaching team of Christian, David, Bailey and Ben. Our player numbers are greatly improved, to the extent that we hope to add a fourth side in 2026, and it has been especially pleasing to see a number of younger Old Scholars return to the Club, or choose us directly from school. This is a positive sign as, like all sports, we must always replenish from ‘below’ with young players to ensure the Club’s future and this looks now to be happening.
On field results are the key measure in any sport though and we are doing well in this area too. As I write this, all three of our teams are very competitive and in the top third of their respective Leagues. Our C Grade team is the real story for us as they have made a Lazarus-like recovery from a very poor 2024 to now be in contention for their first title since 2009. Our Senior and Reserve teams are both very competitive and we hope, this season, for a solid top half position in these competitions with the aim of launching a genuine challenge to the two stand-out opposition clubs in the next year or two.
In summary, we are very pleased with where we are currently placed. There is an extremely positive vibe at the club, numbers at training are excellent and there are plenty of opportunities for all alumni to represent the most successful club in the Saturday Amateur League. Our training nights are Monday and Wednesday evenings, commencing at 6.30pm on the Caterer Oval. There are no limits to the number of Saints Old Scholars that can join the Club: it belongs to them. New non Old Scholars can be included but only with Committee approval, a measure introduced to ensure the history and traditions of the Club are respected.
