The weather was kind & the greens quite slick when we met for our annual bowls match at the Adelaide Bowling Club on Thursday February 17th 2022.
With extra bowlers in attendance, we had eight rinks of fours & one of triples.
I’d like to thank our regular attendees, with quite a few driving down from the country to play. A special thankyou to my old Athelney House mate, John Dunn (ATH 1967) who flew over from Pt Lincoln for the occasion.
A warm welcome to our new bowlers, and there were five of them. They all left Saints back in the eighties lowering our team’s average age by a considerable amount!! It is gratifying to see this influx of new ones & augers well for the future of the competition.
Henry Krichauff (DAC 1952), was easily our oldest bowler, (He left Saints in 1952, when the cane was well & truly in use!) Henry had a wonderful night bowling with the evergreen Rob Natt (SCH 1968). When I left the bowling club, Henry was still enjoying a tipple with Rob’s team & the team from PAOC, skippered by Dave Thomas.
Blues confidence was high after winning the coveted shield for the last three years!
Despite five wins from our nine matches, we were defeated by a jubilant Reds outfit. The final score being SPOC 104 shots to PAOC 131 shots.
Wasn’t John Morris, PAOC convenor pleased to wrap his hands around the shield!!? Although John’s team had earlier succumbed to the immense pressure of Vincent, Scales & Corpe!
I wouldn’t have blamed them for giving us all a rendition of one of their beloved songs!? They did have to put up with our magnificent offering of “Rick Rick Rickety Dick” after last year’s epic win.
We were delighted to have a couple of SPOC committee members present as well. The treasurer, Andrew Jonats (YNG 1987) was a late call up in John Dunn’s (SCH 1967) side. Chairman, Oliver Sheahan (HWK 2007) was there for the duration. Thankyou Oliver for your company, help to Bianca and kind words at the shield presentation.
Once again, thankyou to everyone for your support. PAOC’s John Morris & I have made an executive decision to include everyone who nominates for our Old Scholar’s bowls match. For many years it’s been a match between eight teams from each organisation.
If more guys are interested, we’re happy to accommodate all of you.
Thankyou. I look forward to seeing you all in 2023.
