This season, SPOC Water Polo is thrilled to welcome back old scholar Jack Duggan (FLL 2018), who has returned to the pool to continue his water polo journey at senior level. With a new season and recruitment phase underway, we caught up with Jack to ask about his reasons for joining SPOC Water Polo and what he enjoys most about being part of the team

Q: Jack, what inspired you to return to SPOC after school?
A: It was an easy decision for me. I really enjoyed playing water polo at Saints, and joining SPOC was the best way to stay connected with my teammates and the wider community. It also allows me to keep challenging myself in the sport.

Q: How does senior club water polo differ from school competition?
A: The biggest difference is the speed and physicality. At club level you’re often up against experienced players who’ve been competing for years. The intensity is higher, and you need to adapt quickly—but that’s what makes it so rewarding.

Q: What’s been a highlight of your time with SPOC so far?
A: For me, it’s the camaraderie. Winning is always enjoyable, but it’s the team environment, training together, supporting each other and the social side that makes SPOC such a unique club.

Q: Fitness plays a huge part in water polo. How do you approach that side of the game?
A: Water polo demands strength, endurance and agility, so I make sure my training includes all three. Swimming fitness is obviously essential, but I also focus on core stability, leg strength for eggbeater and recovery work outside the pool. Playing at club level has pushed me to take my fitness more seriously, it’s the foundation for performing well in the water.

Q: What role do you see SPOC playing for old scholars?
A: SPOC is much more than just a sporting club, it’s a way to keep that Saints connection alive. The mix of old scholars and new players creates a strong culture where everyone feels part of something bigger.

Q: Finally, what are your goals for the season ahead?
A: My aim is to keep developing my game, contribute to the team’s success, and help push for finals. Just as importantly, I want to keep enjoying the sport and the friendships that come with it.

Join us for the 2025 season!

SPOC Water Polo continues to thrive thanks to the contributions of old scholars like Jack. Whether you’ve been out of the pool for a few years or simply want to reconnect with the Saints community, now is the perfect time to get involved again.

Trainings are held weekly, with men’s and women’s teams catering for all abilities, from competitive A-grade through to social players who just want to stay fit and have fun.

If you’re an Old Scholar keen to return to water polo, or even just curious to give it a go, we’d love to hear from you.
