Welcome to season 2023! 2023 is somewhat of a new dawn for the SPOC Footy Club with a large contingent of School leavers arriving and some real talent in that new cohort. We have also recruited selectively to bolster our list and have welcomed some former players back to the fold. All in all, it presents a great opportunity for our younger playing cohort to show what they're capable of, and the mood on the track is very positive. The appointment of new coach, Mike O'Leary has been instantly welcomed by the players and Mike has brought with him other keen coaches, who are making a real contribution already.
The appointment of Club stalwart, James Duncan, as captain is thoroughly deserved and has been very well received across the players and broader community. James exemplifies the Club values of commitment, determination and loyalty that we hold so dear.
The Club will have new, younger teams playing under new coaches, so we can look forward to some exciting times this season! Please come and support your Club, the players love your support and your voices on matchday!
This year sees a big double header celebration.
Team of the 20th Century
After many, many years of planning, this year will see the unveiling of the SPOC FC Team of the 20th century! This event will be held on the 18th of August at a luncheon at a venue TBA, which will be a major celebration of all things SPOC. The whole club - past, present and future - will be invited to this significant club function. The Team of the 20th Century had as its Chairman of Selectors, our much-loved Club Legend Grant Lyon, who selected this side before his untimely, sad passing several years ago. Come along and see if you got a berth!
1983 A Grade and B Grade 30 year Premiership Reunions
We will also hold the reunions for all those involved in the very successful 1983 season in which A grade and B grade both won the big dance on a very memorable August Saturday at Alberton Oval against old rivals Sacred Heart. This reunion will kick off at the Team of the 20th Century luncheon on the Friday and continue through Saturday with a special pre-match BBQ function at the Caterer and then back to the Maid for Presentations and post-match celebrations. We especially welcome interstate players and supporters. Come along and hear the stories and how it is possible that there were 40 different Best On Grounds that famous day in the two sides.
It's going to be a great season of celebration.
