Sarah Group is a proud South Australian business - a diversified construction and property group leading a collective of trusted companies with strong expertise across the industry. Established in 1961 by Harry Sarah, the Group has grown to become one of the state’s most significant employers, with 450+ employees across multiple operating subsidiaries. With more than six decades of experience, Sarah Group is recognised for delivering high-quality projects, fostering long-term partnerships and building sustainable communities across South Australia.

Sarah Construction's sponsorship has been instrumental in enabling SPOC to offer meaningful and significant opportunities, activities and programs for old scholars.

James Sarah spent nearly 40 years in the family business, Sarah Group, including over 30 as Joint Managing Director with cousin, Tim.In 2024, James transitioned to a Non-Executive Director role, where he now contributes his knowledge and experience to the Board and the Sarah Family Council to support the next generation of Sarah Group leadership. Over his career, he’s studied both interstate and overseas, participated in local and global professional networks, and held board roles across industry, commercial, and not-for-profit organisations.

SPOC recently conducted an interview with James, seeking to explore his connection to SPSC and ask about what makes Sarah Group a leader in the building industry.

SPOC: What inspired you to start (or lead) a business in the commercial building industry?

James Sarah: Building has been in the family for three generations going on four. I grew up immersed in the building industry and it seemed natural that I should study construction and become involved in the business.

SPOC: How has your company evolved over the years, and what are you most proud of in that journey?

James Sarah: Over its nearly 65 years the business has grown from a small building company to a major multi-faceted property and construction organisation, all the while maintaining its family ethos.

SPOC: What trends or innovations are currently shaping commercial construction in Australia?

James Sarah: Technology is playing a huge part - robotics, AI, 3D printing to name a few. Safety, quality and productivity are all critical success factors and harnessing technological solutions creates opportunities to improve in these and many other areas.

SPOC: Is there advice you would give to young old scholars interested in careers in construction, project management or related fields?

James Sarah: Study engineering, construction or other relevant disciplines as a first step and make sure you’re really attracted to it.

SPOC: Tell me about your connection with St Peter’s College and SPOC

James Sarah: My father and uncle attended Saints in the 1950s, my cousin and I in the '70s -'80s and my two boys in the 2000’s. I loved the school and decided being involved (in a low key way) was worthwhile.

SPOC: Why is supporting the Old Scholars Association important to you and your business?

James Sarah: To me because I’ve got mates who are involved in the association in various ways so its nice to be associated with a cohort who think its worthwhile. For business a bit of brand recognition never hurts!

SPOC: What is the best ‘life advice’ you have ever been given?

James Sarah: “Leave something in it for the next person” - meaning drive a good bargain but not so hard that the other person loses. Strive for win-win, it fosters strong, long term relationships.

Our thanks to James Sarah and Sarah Group for their ongoing support. We ask our members to support our partners whenever they have the opportunity.
