Bridging Generations

A St Peter’s College education extends far beyond academic achievement; it is a deeply human endeavour shaped by the relationships we build and the stories we share. These connections, particularly those forged across generations, enrich the student experience and strengthen our community.

This was evident at our recent Generations Lunch and Muster, where we welcomed 75 old scholars, including 20 fathers of Year 12 students. Students joined grandfathers, fathers, great-uncles and brothers for dessert before accompanying them to Muster, where returning alumni were honoured with a special roll call. The occasion was a moving reminder of legacy, tradition and the enduring culture of excellence that unites our community.

Reflecting on the event, I was reminded of the richness and growing diversity within our community. Our School brings together students from a wide range of family, faith and cultural backgrounds each contributing something unique, and each valued and respected. For many of our old scholars, this may look different from the School they remember. Yet, at the same time, every student becomes part of a broader School identity, one formed over generations and guided by traditions that continue to lead us forward. These connections reflect a shared commitment to excellence, supporting every individual as we pursue the mission of the School through our motto: Pro Deo et Patria.

Earlier this term, our Year 1 students enjoyed a glimpse of life at St Peter’s College decades ago. Six old scholars, including fathers and uncles of current students, shared stories and old photographs. From favourite subjects to tales of chalk dusters, mischievous adventures and lessons learned the hard way, students were captivated. The key takeaway was clear: be kind, listen, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.

Programs like Careers Evening further highlight the impact of these intergenerational connections. Now in its 27th year, the generous contributions of our old scholars as presenters and exhibitors from a wide range of professions ensure the continued success of an event that gives students the chance to explore diverse career paths and gain valuable insights.

We are also grateful to the old scholars featured in the latest edition of Saints Magazine. From Rhodes Scholar Nick Jose (YNG 1969) to international lawyer Andrew Lee (HWK 1994), and Academy Award-nominated director Scott Hicks (HWD 1969), our alumni reflect on success, setbacks and the life lessons learned along the way. Their stories remind us that achievement is rarely linear, and that the guidance, encouragement and the example of others play a vital role in shaping who we become. If you have not received a copy in your letterbox, you can view the digital version here.

Looking ahead, I warmly invite our old scholar community to attend our ANZAC Memorial Service on Friday 24 April. The List of the Fallen will be read by our School Captains and Prefects from 10.15 am, followed by a service led by Father Theo. Morning tea will be served in Big School Room after the service. Click here to register your attendance. Following the service, we encourage old scholars to remain on campus for Community Day, a much-loved tradition on the School calendar. You are warmly invited to enjoy the afternoon’s sporting fixtures and the relaxed, festival-style atmosphere.

And don’t forget to save the date for Back to Saints, a three-day celebration of our old scholars, traditions and community, from Friday 6 November to Sunday 8 November. From reunions and musters to family events and shared moments of connection, it’s an opportunity to return to St Peter’s College, honour our history and celebrate the School community across generations.

To our old scholars, whether you return for milestone occasions, to guide and inspire, or to reconnect with the School, thank you for sharing your time, your stories and your wisdom. By engaging with current students, you are not only enriching their journey but also strengthening the bonds that make this community so special. These connections, across generations, ensure that the culture, values and spirit of St Peter’s College continue to be carried forward.
