From the Headmaster: Connections across Generations

A St Peter’s College education extends well beyond academic achievement; it is a deeply human endeavour shaped by the interactions we share. These connections form the heart of the learning experience, enriching each student’s journey in profound ways.

This spirit of learning through meaningful interaction was evident at the recent SPOC March Luncheon, where we welcomed 55 old scholars, including 10 members of the Class of 1955 celebrating their 70-year reunion. A highlight of the occasion was seeing students join their fathers, grandfathers and great-uncles for dessert before accompanying them to Muster, where they were honoured with a special roll call - an inspiring acknowledgment of legacy and tradition within our community.

We live in an age of information, but beyond curriculum and coursework, it is the meaningful exchanges - particularly with our staff and old scholars - that enrich our student’s journey. The wisdom shared by those who came before us is invaluable, and it was inspiring to hear our old scholars reflect on the enduring virtues of the School, many of which are embedded in the words of our School Prayer. Their reflections reinforced an important truth: while the world around us changes, virtue remains constant.

Many old scholars also spoke of the challenges that pushed them to grow beyond school, echoing an important message I often share with students - school is not the peak of one’s journey, but rather the foundation for lifelong learning. I encourage all students to embrace every opportunity, seek wisdom in their interactions and recognise that true success is not measured by what you gain, but by the person you become.

St Peter’s College is privileged to have an incredibly engaged and generous old scholar community that continues to support and inspire our students. Programs such as the CEO-in-Residence, Careers Evening, guest speaker sessions at Muster, keynote presentations, Junior School classroom visits and the old scholar mentoring program all highlight the impact of these intergenerational connections.

As part of our CEO-in-Residence program, we were honoured to welcome Mr Nick Lee OAM (DAC 1987) on 18 March 2025. Mr Lee shared the defining experiences that have shaped his life and motivated him to assist others. His insights encouraged our students to discover their own sense of purpose and to embrace the fulfillment that comes from leading a meaningful and purpose-driven life.

In the Junior School, our Year 1 students were delighted to host old scholars Bill Papps (FLL 2005), James Edginton (MAC 2001) and Robert Welch (FLL 1955) as part of their HASS families unit. The boys were captivated by stories of school life across generations - from Intercollegiate rivalries to favourite teachers and evolving school uniforms. One message resonated strongly: while academics are important, it’s the friendships and sense of community that last a lifetime. A valuable lesson for our students as they continue writing their own chapter in the SPSC story.

Further celebrating our intergenerational connections, the inaugural Celebrating Generations event brought together 40 current students from 21 sixth and seventh-generation families, highlighting the deep-rooted ties to our School. I extend my gratitude to Jennifer Neill, whose meticulous research has been invaluable in piecing together these remarkable family histories. More about this event can be read here.

I am also grateful for the generous contributions of our old scholar community, which have ensured the continued success of our annual Careers Evening, now in its 25th year. With representatives from over 35 industries, this event remains an essential opportunity for students to explore diverse career paths and gain valuable insights.

Looking ahead, I warmly invite our old scholar community to attend our ANZAC Memorial Service on Tuesday 29 April. The List of the Fallen will be read by our School Captains and Prefects from 10.25 am, followed by a service led by Father Theo. Morning tea will be served in Big School Room after the service. Click here to register your attendance.

As we continue to celebrate our shared heritage and foster meaningful connections, I encourage you to join SPOC Connect to stay updated on old scholar events and explore our photo gallery.
